Topic: Stepping away from moderators and janitors (Sort of)
r04r !GETFUCKED started this discussion 4 weeks ago#16,625
So I've been wanting to do this for a while now, and I finally got to it. Permissions are now dynamically configurable instead of limited to the pre-defined groups. See screenshot for what I'm referring to.
It's not entirely done yet as I'm planning to also make it so that all IP addresses displayed over the to mods/admins will be blanked out if the user doesn't have the open_ip permission. Same for UIDs with open_uid.
All previous mods & janitors still have the same powers as before, they're just defined differently.

Stop mod abusing the mods. :(

If I'm understanding it right, this will just be giving people a given mod power on an individual basis rather than having two different levels of moderator.
Handel !khEOdtKF56 replied with this 4 weeks ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#284,771
if a mod is abusing their power (perhaps by geolocating users lol), some of their power can be taken away now while still having them as a moderator.
fine grained controls are useful~

@284,771
I think that it has potential, since it could mean the board getting around the clock protection and fine-tuned mod privileges.
We'll just have to see how it does in practice.
Handel !khEOdtKF56 replied with this 4 weeks ago, 6 seconds later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#284,780
I was making a joke but since you brought up the point, why would you allow someone to remain as a moderator after they abused their power? If they do it once they will do it again, no matter how much power you don't/do give them.

because you still trust them with some amount of power, just not certain things.
Handel !khEOdtKF56 replied with this 4 weeks ago, 5 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^][v]#284,789
Sorry that's retarded, you either trust them to moderate correctly or you don't. Giving mods varying degrees of power will just complicate things even more and cause more drama!
TBH r04r I think your wasting your time, people will still bitch about moderation no matter what anti-abuse safety features you implement. Moderation has been perfectly fine here for a long time, the people who complaining are people who are upset because they aren't a mod or think they can do a better job.
EDIT: I recommend a sticky.

Sure some people will complain no matter what, but it usually dies down sooner or later.
@284,792
This. There hasn't been anything to eat popcorn to for a while now.

@OP
Why are 'open_profile' and 'mod_pm' separate? Because to send a user a PM you need to go to their profile anyway, right?
Anonymous D replied with this 4 weeks ago, 7 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^][v]#284,801
@previous
I'd assume that there'd just be a PM link on their post.

I know I'm wasting my time, but I've been meaning to do this for a while. The idea isn't really to have a ton of privileged uses with different permissions, just to allow more fine grained control in case it turns out to be useful. That, and it would make events such as the moderator monday thing we did once easier to do if we'd want to.
@284,799
There's a PM link right next to the profile link on posts, but that way it'd also be possible for someone to open profiles but not send PMs. Just more flexibility.

better search, topic merging, better navbar that can be customized from dashboard, +,- rather then joined in and jump to first reply from a poster in thread, colored names, modlog, theme gallery, user2user PMs, better report system (then old TinyBBS have no idea how it looks now), seemingly faster, thread pagination

Normally I'm wary of commenting on MiniBBS, but you seem sincere enough.
> better search
Have you seen the search on here recently? It's really advanced now.
> colored names
Doesn't really matter. Personally I prefer the names being all black rather than having a rainbow in each topic. But hey, it's so minor that it comes down to personal preference really.
> modlog
Eh, I'm not quite sold on it. If it was implemented over here, it could lead to trolls bitching at individual mods over petty things. However, overall I don't think there's a major difference either way.
> user2user PMs
Can be trouble when in the hands of a troll, but otherwise I'm indifferent to it.
> better report system
The one here does the job. Don't see how it could be drastically improved.
> thread pagination
There's a few arguemnts against it, but personally I'm indifferent to it.
Anyway, on the whole I don't think there's a massive difference between each system. Just a few different features.

It looks like Sherlock from Mac OS 9, which is ridiculous.

@284,958
Minichan had a modlog even before it moved to PRQ. Or maybe he meant making it public, that will only induce drama anyways. The underlying system is the same.
@284,948
As for the jumping to the right reply, that works fine here for me in Chrome. What is better about the report system? It is the the same as here. You can report a whole topic or just a post (unlike some other places). Site speed also depends on the load of the hosts server, your line and many other factors. They're hosted on Godaddy, they have loads of servers and shit service. So I'd guess it's a tad faster than the host we use, but also more prone to be suspended/abused.
I'm all for pagination, if it's opt-in or opt-out via the dashboard. Same for custom menu. The layout itself can be changed by using a custom style. You can make it look like pretty much anything. But you really need to give some more details regarding search and reporting if you wish anything to be changed here.

I was under the impression that TinyBBS used PMs for the report system. I don't know if that's still true though.

I don't see how that's much of a problem.
It lets you search by name and headline or body, which is really neat.
Anonymous J replied with this 3 weeks ago, 27 seconds later, 1 day after the original post[^][v]#284,969
@284,967
It never used PMs for that. There's a report page with all reports listed, their status and some additional info.

You only need to use the fist two fields for it to be like the old search. Everything beyond that is basically optional.
